What is a Beard Balm?

A beard balm is a conditioning product that moisturises and nourishes the beard and skin. It can be used to soften your beard and help style and shape it.

So whether you want to moisturise dry areas, style it or help your beard look and feel softer, try this simple beard balm recipe!

Why Make A Beard Balm At Home?

Making your own beard balm is cheaper, more natural, quick and simple to make and you can customise it to your skin needs. The real question is, why would you not make your own beard balm?

Most beard balms cost around £20 or more for only 60ml of product. Why spend that much money when you can make more at home for much less?

Not only that, but you can make sure your beard balm only contains ingredients your skin and beard loves! So if you find the balm isn’t right for you, you can simply adjust the ingredients. See how you can customise this recipe here!

How To Use A Beard Balm

How To Use It

Scoop out a small amount of the homemade beard balm and rub it between your hands to melt it. Then rub it all over your beard and skin underneath. We recommend starting off with a small amount and adding more if needed, as a little goes a long way!

How To Customise Your Beard Balm

The great thing about making your own beard balm, is you can customise every ingredient to suit you better.

Here’s some great substitutions for the ingredients:

Beeswax - The best alternatives for beeswax are olive wax or candelilla wax. They are both great vegan alternatives and they have a similar texture to beeswax, they are just not as creamy as beeswax.

Shea butter - If shea butter doesn’t work well with your skin, you could substitute it out with mango butter. It has a very similar texture and amazing moisturising properties.

Cocoa butter - The butter that is most similar to cocoa butter is kokum butter. It is a very hard butter, like cocoa butter, and it is very nourishing.

Jojoba oil - You can substitute this with any carrier oil! The oil will change the feel of the balm a bit, but it won’t be a huge difference. If you want to try some oils that are a similar texture to jojoba oil, try sweet almond oil, argan oil or grapeseed oil.

Can I Make A Scented Beard Balm?

If you want to add your favourite scent to your beard balm, just add essential oils! Explore our range of essential oils here.

We recommend only adding up to 1% and no more, so in this recipe that would be 1g of essential oil. Make sure you check Category 5B in the IFRA document for your essential oil. Want to learn more about IFRA documents? Read this blog!
